Deadline: 15 June 2026.

With three oceanic coastlines—Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific—and the world’s longest coastline, alongside a highly dynamic mathematical community, Canada offers rich opportunities for disciplinary or interdisciplinary collaborations on the theme of mathematics for the ocean.

The international research laboratories CRM-CNRS, Takuvik, Takuvik, and PIMS-CNRS, with support from the CNRS Mission for Transverse Initiatives, are offering a two-week exploratory stay in Canada in the field of mathematics for the ocean to two mathematician, each affiliated with a CNRS-hosted joint research unit or research federation.

The aim of this stay is to establish contacts with the Canadian “mathematics and oceans” community and to begin developing a scientific project that will serve as the basis for a CNRS assignment application (with delegation for university personnel) in one of the international laboratories:

  • CRM-CNRS (Québec province)
  • PIMS-CNRS (Western Canada) The assignment will last six months or one year in 2028–2029 (with applications submitted in autumn 2027).

The stay will be divided into two phases:

  • One week in Québec City ( and CRM-CNRS)
  • One week in Vancouver (PIMS-CNRS)

The following expenses will be covered:

  • Travel costs between France and Canada, and within Canada
  • Daily allowance to cover accommodation

Application dossier must include:

  • A curriculum vitae listing publications, especially those linking mathematics and oceans (any connection to oceans is acceptable)

  • A short description (a few pages) covering:

    • Any previous work on the theme of mathematics and oceans
    • Interest in developing this theme
    • Expectations for the short exploratory stay
    • Expectations for a one-year assignment in Canada
  • Planned dates for the stay (between 15 August and 31 December 2026)

  • Any other elements the candidate wishes to share with the selection committee

The dossier does not need to demonstrate existing collaborations with Canada; the goal is to foster networking. However, candidates are welcome to include such collaborations if they exist, whether in other fields in Canada or on the mathematics and oceans theme elsewhere.

Candidates commit to seriously considering applying for a CNRS assignment (with possible delegation) at CRM-CNRS and/or PIMS-CNRS for at least six months.
